CRESST Assessment

Funded by the U.S. Department of Education and the Office of Educational Research and Improvement, the National Center for Research on Evaluation, Standards, and Student Testing (CRESST) conducts research on important topics related to K-12 educational testing. They have an excellent glossary and links to examples of rubrics.

This site is designed to assist Literacy and Basic Skills (LBS) Program delivery agencies in Ontario to develop and apply learning outcomes demonstrations. Demonstrations measure the ability of adults to successfully integrate and apply various elements of their literacy learning to everyday life.

Equipped for the Future

EFF is a standards-based reform initiative aimed at improving the quality of the adult literacy system and building the capacity of that system to more effectively assist adults in accomplishing their goals in life. The site provides comprehensive information about the EFF Content Framework, the ongoing work in research and development of the EFF Assessment Framework and how these tools can be used to align curriculum, instruction, assessment, and accountability with adult students' purposes and goals.

Fair Test: The National Center for Fair & Open Testing

Fair Test is an advocacy organization devoted to ensuring the fair, accurate, and unbiased administering of standardized tests. Their Web site provides information on current educational policies and testing research.

A Humorous Look at Performance-Based Assessment

This site provides a tongue-in-cheek look at some authentic assessment tasks such as in economics. "Develop a realistic plan for refinancing the national debt. Run for Congress." There is also valuable non- tongue-in-cheek information on this site.

Interactive Classroom

National Assessments of Adult Literacy

The National Assessment of Adult Literacy (NAAL) is a nationally representative and continuing assessment of English language literacy skills of American adults that seeks to describe the status of adult literacy in the U.S.; report on national trends; and identify relationships between literacy and selected characteristics of adults. NAAL previously conducted a National Adult Literacy Survey (NALS) in 1992.

National Assessment Governing Board

The Governing Board is an independent, bipartisan group whose members include governors, state legislators, local and state school officials, educators, business representatives, and members of the general public. Congress created the 26-member Governing Board in 1988 to set policy for the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) -- commonly known as the "The Nation's Report Card" for K-12.

National Reporting System (NRS)

The National Reporting System for Adult Education (NRS) is an outcome-based reporting system for the state-administered, Federally funded adult education program. Developed with the support of the U.S. Department of Education's Division of Adult Education and Literacy (DAEL), the NRS continues a cooperative process by state adult education directors and DAEL to identify appropriate learner outcomes for adult education.

This site is operated by Houghton Mifflin, the educational publishing house. It's a good introduction to portfolio assessment, giving short but precise explanations for some of the key issues and themes.

Riverside Publishing

Riverside Publishing produces a wide variety of educational materials, including tests. They are part of the larger educational publishing house, Houghton Mifflin. This site is a good introduction to the Diagnostic Assessment of Reading (DAR) with Trial Teaching Strategies and the Diagnostic Assessment of Reading.

SABES Assessment Support Web Site

This site has been designed to help program managers, teachers, and other practitioners deal effectively with the new learning gain assessment and reporting requirements in DOE-funded ABE programs in Massachusetts. There are also resources useful to ABE workers outside the state of Massachusetts including an assessment bibliography and glossary.

WestEd

WestEd is a nonprofit research, development, and service agency, focused mostly on K through 12, but is also committed to improving learning at all stages of life - from infancy to adulthood, both in school and out. The agency traces its history back to 1966 when Congress created a network of Regional Educational Laboratories. As one of the nation's Regional Educational Laboratories, WestEd serves Arizona, California, Nevada, and Utah, but their work also extends throughout the rest of the United States, as well as internationally.
