Overview Session II - We all know ESOL learners who we suspect may have learning disabilities and many programs seek to have learners tested. In this webinar, Robin Lovrien Schwarz will summarize her recently completed research on the findings on the issue of direct testing of ESOL learners for learning disabilities. In response to these issues, Robin will briefly review factors that cause ESOL learners to struggle in learning and appear to have a learning disability. Practice has shown that when these factors are addressed in program policies and instruction, many fewer learners will be suspected of having learning disabilities.

Details: A webinar is short for web based seminar. It is a presentation, lecture, workshop or seminar transmitted over the web. A key feature of a webinar is its interactive elements - the ability to give, receive, and discuss information. In contrast, a webcast does not allow interaction between the presenter and the audience. Wimba is the webinar tool that CMA SABES uses.

Bio: Ms. Schwarz has been a consultant and trainer in the field of learning difficulties in adult ESOL learners for over 20 years. She has a masters degree in Special Education and is currently a doctoral candidate at Lesley University in ESOL and learning difficulties. She has participated in numerous state and national initiatives on adult ESOL, presented at national conferences and has authored numerous articles and chapters in books. She is currently doing contract writing for National Institute for Literacy (NIFL) on adult English language learners (ELL's) with low or limited literacy skills. She is also contributing to a literature review for Bridges to Practice (the NIFL learning disabilities training program) on testing ELL's for learning disabilities.
