Many ESOL programs submitted scope and sequences, unit plans, and other curriculum materials this year and received feedback from the SABES PD Center for ESOL and ACLS. Included in these recommendations was participation in one or more of our PD offerings on curriculum development. The following opportunities are coming up in the next couple of months, and we encourage anyone involved in unit or lesson planning to participate:
- February 10 and March 3: Unit Planning Using Backward Design: In this participatory workshop, you will develop instructional units using the Backward Design approach, aligning desired learning outcomes, assessment, and activities.
- February 10: Principles of Second Language Acquisition – Standard 1: This three-part offering includes a face-to-face session, online companion course, and a follow-up webinar, providing you with an overview of second language acquisition theories and principles with a focus on their application in the ESOL classroom.
- March 3: Curriculum and Instructional Design: Standard 4: In this workshop, you will focus on using a learner-driven curriculum design process to review program goals, develop curriculum scope and sequence, and make connections between the ESOL Curriculum Framework and the CCR Standards.
- March 24: ESOL Lesson Planning: This 3-hour workshop applies Wiggins and McTighe’s Backward Design approach and walks you through a lesson planning template, to which you can apply the CCR Standard and shifts to increase the rigor of an ESOL lesson.
New PD offerings are added regularly, so please check the SABES Calendar often for new opportunities.
