The Brochure Project Process

The Read/Write/Now Brochure Project was orchestrated during our second year of health funding from the DOE's Comprehensive Health Grant. It was introduced into the evening classes by the Health Team Members. Here is an outline of the steps taken to complete this project from its start. Survey the class for topics. Students were asked to name health issues. These could be topics they already knew about or wanted to learn more about.

  1. Compile health information of these topics. Health Team members went to the MA Prevention Center and brought back posters, pamphlets, videos and brochures on these topics.
  2. Discuss the brochure model. The goal of the project was to rewrite brochures with information that was easy to read and accessible to everyone. A "model brochure" was distributed as a guideline for the project.
  3. Select a topic and draft a brochure. With assistance from both Health Team members and teachers, learners selected topics and began writing a draft using the printed materials as reference guides.
  4. Edit and revise draft. Using the process writing approach, learners shared their drafts with their writing groups, made changes, and revised as needed.
  5. Type and select a graphic. Learners and teachers typed up their information using the brochure format. Using graphics from Print Artist, a picture was selected for the front or back of the brochure.
  6. Final edit for publication. Health team members, learners and teachers checked final drafts for accuracy and print readiness.
  7. Publish and distribute. Copies of these brochures were published and distributed to local health centers, libraries, other adult education programs and shared with programs at the final health conference.
