You might find one or more of these rubrics useful for assessing student skills in ways that are more complex ("constructed response") than fill-in or matching quizzes ("selected response"). We include a wide range of samples, including a version of the REEP writing rubric revised so that it can be used in ABE as well as ESOL classrooms. The official GED writing rubric is also included.

An ESOL teacher describes her "Building Blocks to Your Success" visual display that is a constant reminder to her students of what their goals are, the progress they have made, and what steps are yet to be accomplished.

Lawrence ALP Countable Outcomes (4 p., 21 KB)  [PDF icon]
A low-level ESOL teacher describes her success at integrating student goals into her teaching and shares her goals vocabulary pictures — in both small and large sizes — and the goals process she uses within her classroom.

Integrating Goal Setting into Instructional Practice (2 p., 14 KB)  [PDF icon]
A July 2008 update from the Center for New Americans, along with a handy goal-setting flow chart.

Goal documentation sheets
Documentation of progress towards their goals supports the learner's persistence and helps program record keeping. The Lawrence Adult Learning Center shares their Goal Documentation Sheets which lay out the specific necessary documentation or contains a simple student/staff verification statement where appropriate or acceptable.

 

Lesson Plans

UMass Dartmouth/WEP ESOL Lesson Plans
Here is a full set of lesson planning guides for SPLs 0-6 developed by the staff at the the UMass Dartmouth Workers' Education Program in New Bedford. Each four-page guide lists the ESOL listening, speaking, reading and writing benchmarks for that SPL and recommends specific teaching approaches and materials. Brockton Adult Learning Center: Program-wide curriculum samples (7 p., 312 KB)  [PDF icon]
Suzanne Martin and her staff at Brockton Adult Learning Center aligned ESOL and ABE classes by CF benchmarks. These sample pages illustrate how they arranged benchmarks in rubric form to track learner progress.

Hampden County Sheriff’s Dept.: Full program-wide curriculum (173 p., 6.4 MB)  [PDF icon]
Andree Duvall and her staff at the Hampden County Sheriff's Office developed this extensive curriculum guide for developing lesson plan units, for both ESOL and ABE classes. They are now revising to align with the Curriculum Frameworks, which had not been available at the time of development.

Juntos Collaborative: Full program-wide curriculum (42 p., 2.7 MB)  [PDF icon]
Glenn Yarnell and colleagues from the Juntos collaborative in Holyoke prioritized CF standards and benchmarks for ESOL and ABE classes. They also arranged them by topics that their learners have historically shown interest in.

Lowell Adult Education Center: Full program-wide curriculum (142 p., 3.1 MB)  [PDF icon]
Gerry McSwiggin, Debbie Francoeur, and Laurie Tirado of the Lowell Adult Education Center developed a program-wide curriculum that aligns all classes with CF standards/benchmarks and BEST Plus assessment scores. For new teachers, they further aligned with the Stand Out (italics) series of texts.

Mathematics Curriculum for Incarcerated Adults (64 p., 950 KB)  [PDF icon]
Staff members from the County Houses of Correction and the Department of Corrections have developed a mathematics curriculum that aligns all of their ABE math classes with prioritized Curriculum Framework standards and benchmarks.
