[abacus graphic] Welcome to the SABES Math Initiative

The SABES Math Initiative, an extended professional development program spanning three years, was driven by three basic goals:

  1. To increase the competence and confidence of ABE teachers in teaching math
  2. To change teachers classroom practices in teaching math
  3. To encourage "all math at all levels" in ABE classrooms, drawing from, and deepening the understanding of, the Massachusetts ABE Curriculum Frameworks

The Initiative spawned workshops, the Math Circus, the SABES Math Bulletin, and the Teacher to Teacher (T2T) intensive math professional development regional groups. Much of this work will continue in the future, due to its phenomenal success. Many of the resources contained in the SABES math/numeracy curriculum materials web pages were generated by T2T practitioner leaders and participants.

Throughout its existence, the SABES Math Initiative has linked to the national Teachers Investigating Adult Numeracy (TIAN) professional development project.
