Overview

This interactive workshop will review the latest research and evidence-based practices on trauma-informed (TI) teaching and advising. We will explore TI strategies for building resilience into our classrooms, advising approaches, and program supports.

Description

Exposure to trauma and toxic stress including violence and chronic poverty can significantly impact our adult students’ ability to learn and thrive. Traumatic exposures may pose an especially significant learning barrier among high-risk and vulnerable adult learners who are balancing education with multiple jobs, family demands, few resources, unmet social needs, and adversity backgrounds.

This workshop is geared towards teachers and advisors, and is also relevant to anyone who wants to learn more about trauma-informed approaches to program design. We will review the latest research and evidence-based practices on trauma-informed (TI) teaching and advising. We will spend a significant amount of our time exploring TI strategies for building resilience into our classrooms and supporting adult students in our programs. Participants will be encouraged to reflect upon their own settings and identify assets for creating TI learning environments.
