Overview

This workshop outlines a range of civics topics appropriate for EL/Civics citizenship–preparation classes, along with tips and strategies to help teachers design activities that are engaging, accessible, and meaningful to English language learners at all levels.

Description

Teaching civics, whether in a broadly-focused EL/Civics class, or a narrowly shy-focused  citizenship test prep class, can present special challenges for ESL teachers. The  presenter will begin by outlining the range of instructional topics suitable for either  setting. She will then offer tips and strategies to help teachers design engaging activities  that bring life to seemly dry, abstract concepts and ensure that the content is accessible  and meaningful even to students at the lowest levels of proficiency.  Participants will  work in small groups to refine lessons and apply strategies.
