Overview

This workshop guides you through a curriculum development process using a systematic approach to instructional planning that builds on the following: MA ESOL Curriculum Framework, the College and Career Readiness Standards for Adult Education (CCR Standards), the program mission, learner goals, and clearly articulated outcomes. It includes both a face-to-face workshop and an online companion course.

This workshop is one of six based on the MA Professional Standards for Teachers of Adult ESOL.

    Audience

This professional development activity/course is designed for:

  • ESOL teachers and program directors interested in developing curricula for their ESOL program
Description

An effective ESOL curriculum for adult learners is based on their goals and interests and is relevant to their lives as family members, working people, and community participants. The lessons derived from a responsive and engaging ESOL curriculum provide opportunities for learners to practice and use new language in preparation for use outside the classroom. In this 5-hour workshop, we focus on using a learner-driven curriculum design process to:

  • Review program goals
  • Develop curriculum scope and sequence
  • Make connections to both the ESOL Curriculum Framework and the CCR Standards

Activities include hands-on practice with developing contextualized thematic curriculum units that allow learners to demonstrate learning and progress related to their personal, academic, and employment goals. Instructional resources and materials are shared to minimize the need to reinvent the wheel. Following the face-to-face workshop is an online companion course to support you in applying what you’ve learned. The companion course is facilitated by the workshop presenter, and participation is expected.

    Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this professional development activity/course, you will be able to:

  • Identify the curriculum components used in your ESOL program and those required in MA ESOL programs
Use the MA ESOL Curriculum Framework and CCR Standards to guide curriculum development and instruction
Use the Backward Design approach to short-term and long-term instructional planning
Plan action steps to develop a standards-based curriculum
