Overview

Developed by the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL), this workshop focuses on research-based techniques to vocabulary instruction and how they can be incorporated in activities in a variety of contexts for adult learners.

    Audience

This professional development activity/course is designed for:

  • Novice and experienced teachers of adult English language learners
Description

This engaging one-day workshop is designed to increase understanding and provide practical resources regarding vocabulary instruction for educators working with English learners in their classrooms. The workshop will focus on techniques to foster the vocabulary acquisition needed to meet the CCR Standards. Based on CAL’s large-scale, federally funded vocabulary research, the workshop presenter will describe how research-based techniques to vocabulary instruction can be incorporated in activities in a variety of contexts for adult learners.

The workshop focuses on four key research-based components that comprise strategic vocabulary instruction:

  1. Strategic instruction of high-utility vocabulary
  2. How to foster a motivating learning environment that is rich in words
  3. Approaches to promote students’ independent word-learning skills
  4. Assessment techniques that inform strategic vocabulary instruction

The CAL facilitator will review research behind vocabulary acquisition for English learners and findings from CAL studies in this area. She will also demonstrate methods for identifying and teaching high-frequency, high-utility academic vocabulary and then guide you in developing classroom activities for introducing words with pictures and teaching words in the context of reading and literacy activities. You will have an opportunity to construct activities aimed at reinforcing learners’ vocabulary knowledge through engaging, multi-modal activities and assessment tasks that strategically inform classroom vocabulary and literacy instruction.
