Overview

Multilevel class?  Short on time?  Short on computers?  This workshop shows how to develop a versatile, engaging project focused on developing students' technology and research skills alongside the "traditional" ESOL skills of reading, speaking, listening and writing.

Description

Adult ESOL groups are usually not leveled according to students' tech skills and include students of widely varying tech competency levels.  The workshop provides the opportunity to explore ways to help students to develop tech competency and learning skills while using the multilevel character of a typical adult ESOL group to students' advantage.  The participants will learn the methodology of a versatile tech-based project focused on developing students' technology and research skills alongside the "traditional" ESOL skills of reading, speaking, listening and writing.  The project can be accomplished in a relatively short time, may include, but does not require, extensive use of a computer lab, and, if the access to a computer lab is limited, can be done with smartphones (regular Android of iPhones with standard set of apps and IE or Chrome) used for internet research on assigned topics.  The project can also be organized as a series of "tech mini-projects" over a course of several weeks with students having smaller weekly technology research assignments.  The participants of the workshop will develop similar projects and will be offered support in carrying out their projects.  They will share experiences/provide feedback at a final webinar.

Training includes a 2.5 hour face-to-face workshop, 1 hour online discussion for follow-up and support work, 1 hour for posting and reading discussion comments, and 1 hour final webinar on March 4, 2016 from 1-2.
