This two-hour workshop is a practical introduction to strategies that ESOL teachers can use to communicate clearly with students, especially those at the beginning level.

    Audience

    This professional development activity/course is designed for:

  • Novice teachers
    Seasoned teachers (and/or the trainers and supervisors who work with them) who would like a refresher
Description

ESOL teachers can use many strategies to get ideas across clearly to students with limited English language proficiency. In this participatory workshop, the presenter will share several effective strategies she has amassed over nearly 40 years of working with English language learners. Participants will have a chance to practice these strategies together and will go home with ideas on how to monitor their efforts to make content accessible and comprehensible to their students, especially students at the beginning level.

    Upon completion of this professional development activity/course, you will be able to:

  • Identify elements of “teacher talk” that foster clear communication
    Demonstrate strategies for making content accessible to students at beginning ESOL levels
    Consider ways to monitor the effectiveness of your own classroom communications
