Overview

The Art of Teaching, part of the Foundations for New Staff course, is required for all teachers new to the adult education (AE) field. This two-day, 10-hour course includes 9 hours of face-to-face time and 1 hour of online work. During the course, you will explore the latest research and promising practices of teaching while reflecting on your own craft. Topics include adult learning and development theories, curriculum and planning, formative and summative assessments, and high-quality, engaging, and coherent instructional practices that reflect high expectations for all students regarding content, quality of effort, and work.

    Audience

This professional development activity/course is designed for:

  • Staff new to the AE field who have been employed for 12 months or less
Experienced educators who want to review the newest research and promising practices on effective teaching
Description

This course will help you create a vision of effective teaching in the AE classroom. Instructional and formative assessment strategies are modeled throughout the course, and you are encouraged to share your own best practices. The elements of effective lesson planning will be explored, including:

  • Writing measurable learning objectives that align with the College and Career Readiness Standards for Adult Education (CCRSAE) and the Massachusetts ESOL Curriculum Frameworks
  • Developing appropriate summative and formative assessments
  • Developing high-quality, engaging, differentiated, and coherent instructional practices to engage all learners

You will become familiar with the CCRSAE and be able to describe how the standards can help your students be college and career ready. The importance of continual self-reflection for professional growth is discussed and modeled throughout the course. The course uses the Massachusetts Adult Education (MA AE) Educator Growth and Evaluation rubric as its base.

The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (ESE) requires all teaching staff in an ESE-funded AE program to complete Foundations for New Staff: The Art of Teaching within the first 12 months of employment. Teaching staff do not need to take this course if they were previously employed at an ESE-funded ABE program and already possess a certificate of completion from the Foundations course or from its predecessor, New Staff Orientation.

Note: Successful completion of Foundations for New Staff: Overview of the Adult Education Field is a prerequisite for this course.

    Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this professional development activity/course, you will be able to:

Describe two classroom strategies teachers can use to support student persistence in their class
Explain four instructional practices, methods, or activities that promote the learning and growth of all students
Describe four elements of a well-structured instructional unit or lesson to promote the learning and growth of all students and to support college and career readiness as outlined in the MA AE Educator Growth and Evaluation rubric
