Contextualized instruction is an effective classroom practice that helps students develop academic skills and career awareness of current industry and sector-focused issues. In this highly participatory, facilitated online course, you will learn about the principles and techniques of contextualized instruction, which will help you achieve your long-term instructional goals.
This professional development activity/course is designed for:
- Adult educators who work in a variety of settings, including high school equivalency, college transition, and ESOL classrooms, have a grasp of the College and Career Readiness Standards for Adult Education as well as standards-based instruction, and want to deepen their ability to integrate career-focused content into their lessons.
Recent research and adult education redesign initiatives highlight the need to rethink adult education curricula to support students’ short and long term education and career goals. This facilitated, 24-hour online course will provide you with curriculum planning tools and instructional strategies to help your students to build confidence, develop academic skills and pursue pathways to meaningful careers.The SABES Center for Education and Career Planning is partnering with World Education’s E-Learning PD Center to set aside space in this course, which is offered nationally, for Massachusetts adult educators.
This facilitated course runs for seven weeks and requires approximately 3–4 hours per week for assignments and posting to the online discussion board. You will receive a schedule of weekly course assignments after you've enrolled in the course.
There are no synchronous (real-time) activities in this course. However, there are assignments that are due according to a weekly schedule, which registrants will receive a week before the course start date.
To earn a certificate of completion, you must:
- Complete course readings and videos
- Complete the required posts
- Conduct an analysis of a contextualized literacy lesson using the framework introduced in the course
- Create a plan for contextualized lesson development using authentic materials
Upon request, participants who earn a certificate of course completion may also be eligible for 24 Professional Development Points.
