This hybrid two-part training introduces participants to the Scope and Sequence for English Language Arts (ELA) and to the rationale for integrated ELA instruction for ABE/ASE students. Tackle questions such as "How do we build in the flexibility to meet the needs of the students we have in the room while also addressing established curricular goals?" Develop one comprehensive unit outline and be well on your way to developing one level of an ELA Scope and Sequence for a full academic cycle. Examples from the first round of ELA Scope and Sequences will be shared.
This training will be delivered in two parts, with Homework in between:
Part 1: Face-to-Face: Wednesday, March 16, 2016 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
> Homework: Share unit outlines-under-development in an online forum
Part 2: Webinar: Tuesday, May 10, 2016 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.
- Describe the components of an ELA Scope and Sequence and how they interrelate
- Connect standards-based curriculum development to integrated ELA instruction
- Begin to address key concerns in balancing curriculum design needs for students, programs, and the state
- Apply the ACLS template for the ELA Scope and Sequence
- Implement a plan for developing an ELA Scope and Sequence unique to the program context
Upon completion of this professional development activity/course, you will be able to:
The program director (or a curriculum leader) and at least one member of the teaching staff should attend as a team. Programs get the most out of the training when they attend in teams.
For the face-to-face session, please bring a copy of the College and Career Readiness Standards for Adult Education (CCRSAE), a laptop for team work, and possible texts and materials to be incorporated into units.
Full completion of all three components is required in order to earn credit for eight PD hours: (1) face-to-face session participation, (2) homework, (3) webinar participation.
