Overview

This workshop outlines a range of civics topics and activities that extend beyond citizenship preparation and are meaningful to English language learners (ELs) at all levels.

    Audience

This professional development activity/course is designed for:

  • New and veteran ESOL teachers
    ESOL program directors
Description

Teaching civics, whether in a broadly focused EL Civics class or a narrowly focused citizenship test prep class, can present special challenges for ESOL teachers. In this workshop, you will learn a range of instructional topics suitable for either setting. The instructor offers tips and strategies to help you design engaging activities that bring life to seemingly dry, abstract concepts and to ensure that the content is accessible and meaningful to all students, even those at the lowest levels of proficiency. You will then work in small groups to refine your lessons and plan how to apply the strategies to your classroom setting.

    Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this professional development activity/course, you will be able to:

  • Identify civics topics suitable for EL Civics and citizenship test preparation classes
Create and refine civics lessons in order to increase engagement, accessibility, and meaning for ELs at all levels
