The SABES Central Resource Center at World Education seeks a full-time Director to provide overall educational leadership, management, and coordination for SABES, a statewide training and technical assistance initiative for Massachusetts adult literacy programs and staff. SABES provides professional development and program and system capacity building services to more than 300 Massachusetts adult basic education and English language programs annually. Founded in 1990, SABES is a collaboration of six organizations: five Regional Support Centers (RSCs) located at community colleges and at the University of Massachusetts and a Central Resource Center (CRC) at World Education, a Boston-based nonprofit. SABES is funded by, works closely with, and is guided by the priorities of the Massachusetts Department of Education's Adult and Community Learning Services unit.
Responsibilities
- Provide leadership and oversee strategic planning for SABES as a whole and for the CRC.
- Coordinate development and implementation of the annual SABES workplan.
- Provide direction, support and supervision of CRC staff members. Oversee CRC activities including coordination of assessment training, coordination of workforce development training, support for practitioners pursuing the ABE Teacher's License, development of other specific training and support for ABE/ESOL teachers and directors, support for the statewide research and resource collection, development and maintenance of the SABES website, organization of a summer institute for directors, and production of field-based publications. Ensure timely accomplishment of CRC deliverables.
- Develop and monitor the annual CRC budget.
- Within the workplan framework and based on personal interests and field-driven needs, participate in SABES developmental activities such as design and provision of staff development for program directors, licensure, assessment, distance learning, etc.
- Coordinate internal evaluation processes for SABES.
- Serve as primary liaison from SABES to the Massachusetts Department of Education. Prepare quarterly reports on progress/achievements based on the contractual scope of services and annual workplan.
- Represent SABES within Massachusetts, regionally, and nationally at conferences, professional organizations, and task forces. With other SABES staff, maintain collaborative relationships with key ABE/ESOL organizations including the Massachusetts Coalition for Adult Education, ABE Directors Council, and New England Literacy Resource Center.
- Develop funding proposals.
- Participate in statewide SABES meetings, SABES workgroup meetings, and CRC meetings.
- Convene and facilitate meetings of the SABES Advisory Group.
- Provide direction, support, and supervision of Adult Literacy Hotline staff and MassAAL staff.
- Participate in World Education U.S. Division meetings and activities.
Qualifications
- At least five years experience in adult basic education or professional development required. Knowledge of ABE and ESOL practice, policy, research, and current issues.
- Demonstrated understanding and skill in professional and organizational development.
- Demonstrated ability in educational leadership, program management, budgeting, and staff supervision and evaluation.
- Experience with and ability to facilitate group decision-making.
- Experience with leadership of an educational system or program.
- Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with funders and policymakers.
- Demonstrated ability in program design and proposal development.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to balance multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
- Ability to travel throughout Massachusetts regularly, and regionally and nationally as needed.
- Commitment to building staff diversity.
