Maps and Directions

Millie LaBranche asked her sister, Adrienne, if she knew how to get from her house in Dorchester to Pine Manor College. Millie was almost done with her adult diploma program. She was going to graduate in three weeks. She was visiting colleges in the Boston area. Most of them were easy to get to by the MBTA (“the T”) but she had no idea how to get to Pine Manor. She knew it was in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts.  But where was that?

Adrienne said they could use the Internet at the Codman Square branch library to get a map and directions online. Adrienne added, “We could buy a computer to use at home If you would pay for half of it.”

At the library, Adrienne showed Millie how to use MapQuest. She went to http://www.mapquest.com/ and she saw this:

Under What, she typed in Pine Manor College.  She didn’t have any other information except Chestnut Hill so she typed that in City, and MA for State. Then she selected this:

Millie now had the address.  She also had links to a Map, Directions To and Directions From. Millie selected Map and this took her to this street map:

She figured out that the red star on the map was Pine Manor College. But she didn’t see how this would help her to get there. She went back (by selecting the web page back button) and selected Directions To.  It took her to this:

Millie typed in her Address, 480 Washington Street, and for the city, Dorchester and for the state, MA.  Then she selected this:

But these were driving directions, and Millie didn’t have a car.  If she took a taxi, she thought these would help, so she printed them out.  But she asked Adrienne if she knew how to get directions there using the T.

Adrienne suggested they type mbta into a search engine.  They choose the Google search engine, and typed in mbta.  The first link was to mbta.com so they selected that. They found a map with Codman Square on it, but they could see it would be difficult to get from there to Chestnut Hill by bus or train.  Millie decided to take a Taxi.  And the directions were very helpful because the taxi driver had never heard of

Pine Manor College.
