Resize
Take the existing image in its entirety and
make everything smaller
Photoshop: [Select on Image
Menu / Image Size then enter in new Pixel Dimensions for Height and Width.
Make sure Constrain Proportions is
checked]

Photoshop Elements: [Select on Image Menu / Resize / Image Size then enter in new Pixel Dimensions

Paintshop Pro: [Select on Image menu / Resize
Then enter in new dimensions in Width or Height in Pixel Size Box.
Make sure maintain Aspect Ratio box is checked]
GIMP: [Select Image Menu / Scale Image then enter in new pixel dimensions for Height and Width
set Interpolation to Cubic]
In most instances it is best to try to do both, first Cropping
then Resizing. Aim for images that are no more than 300-500 pixels for their
largest side. Remember the larger the image the longer it will take for your
viewers to see them via the web. End JPEG or GIF files sizes should be approximately
30-60KB and no larger.
