Dear Friends and Colleagues,

SABES West has settled into our new offices in downtown Holyoke. The paint has dried, the paper files purged and the new restaurants have all been sampled. Now it's time to crank up the professional development heat. In the next few months you'll be invited to participate in a broad array of events including: workshops on the ABE Professional Standards, SMARTT & Cognos trainings delivered online, counselor sharing groups, and assessment trainings. We hope that you can take advantage of these and more in our new setting before the winter sets in.

College for a Day
C4AD

  Offered again!

This year, we are doing one event.  It will be on Wednesday, March 16, 2011 from 8:30 - 1.  You can expect the usual; a light breakfast, inspiring keynote speaker, wonderful faculty and a great introduction to community college for all students!

Registration information will be coming out in February.  For now, Save the Date and plan ahead!

A New Look at Distance Learning

The Ludlow Adult Learning Center (LALC) and The Literacy Project, Greenfield (TLP), are trying out a revised model of distance learning from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.  One hope is that the new design will bring adults into the centers and not keep them at a distance. Perhaps better named "Online Learning" to distance this type of service delivery from the physical distance and oftentimes resultant isolation felt by participants, adult students will have many different ways to maintain contact with others and develop their own learning community. At these two sites, the overall intent of this service delivery model is to, in the case of ABE, address transportation challenges, and in the case of ESOL, address unserved students on the waitlist.

TLP has 10 slots funded for online GED/Pre-GED instruction, where they recruit, intake, and do some support and counseling for students, who get all of their online instructional services through the distance learning 'hub' at Quinsigamond Community College.  In addition, TLP has partnered with a new organization in Turners Falls called STRIVE, which provides web-connected computers and some tutoring to adults working towards their GED. All students will be using McGraw-Hill's GED.

LALC has 20 slots funded, all in ESOL.  Of those 20, 10 slots will be served directly from the 'hub' out of Notre Dame / Cathedral in Boston.  These students will be recruited from the waitlist.  And, in a new twist, the remaining 10 slots will be for students already enrolled in a rates-based class at the center. These ten students will be getting greater intensity of services by being able to continue their studies at home. All 20 students will have access to counseling and other support services.  The staff are currently finishing a four week staff development training.  Students will use USALearns.org for their online instruction.  USALearns.org is a free software package for ESOL students teachers at the LALC have already been using.

Statewide there are two hubs, one for ESOL and one for ABE.  Then there are 11 partner sites, like LALC and TLP, which work directly with the hub to recruit and support students. This initiative falls under DESE's mission to increase access and intensity of instruction to MA adults.  In a few months we'll touch base with both sites to see how they are doing. Here's hoping that these students go the distance!

Lynne Weintraub, of the Jones Library in Amherst, has done the invaluable work of sorting through the multitude of websites available to English Language Learners. She organizes them and gives them a brief introduction and overview.  Find her invaluable list here  http://www.joneslibrary.org/esl/info/adult.html and look for a SABES-hosted training on these resources in January.
