The SABES Program Support PD Center has added 13 new cultural competence resources to the library that were collected and annotated specifically for us and adult educators by Dr. Vivian Carlo, Professor Emerita, Lesley University Graduate School of Education. Vivian presented the PD session Cultural Competence: Putting Equity Front and Center in Our Teaching and Advising that we hosted last spring. A highly-engaged group participated in the session and had this to say about it:
- “Vivian is an expert in her field and influenced us to do our own critical thinking.”
- “I thought I would leave the session feeling heavy and depressed, but I felt energized and enlightened.”
Look for another series of sessions with Vivian in FY20. Be sure to include Cultural Competence in your SABES notification settings, to receive updates on news and events.
In the meantime, check out the new resources by selecting Program Support: Cultural Competence from the drop down menu of the SABES Resource Library search tool. You’ll find research, brief articles, websites, You Tube videos, ready-to-use classroom activities, and quizzes and knowledge checks to build your cultural competence and bring greater awareness and attention to promoting social justice and equity in your teaching and advising.
