The Massachusetts Professional Standards for Teachers of Adult Speakers of Other Languages outline what teachers of adult English language learners need to know and be able to do. The standards were developed collaboratively over a two-year period with considerable input from Massachusetts adult ESOL practitioners, staff from SABES and the Department of ESE, and several TESOL experts and scholars. They were completed in the spring of 2014. The standards are informed by research into second language acquisition and applied linguistics as well as by other standards, including TESOL's. They provide guidance and support to teachers that will assist them in meeting their learners’ needs, ultimately resulting in successful English language learning.
Professional development sessions on each of the standards are offered across the state, providing teachers with many opportunities to investigate the standards and customize their own professional development–whether they are novice or experienced practitioners.
