In this participatory workshop, you will develop instructional units using the Backward Design approach, which aligns desired learning outcomes, assessment, and activities.

    Audience

This professional development activity/course is designed for:

  • ESOL teachers and directors involved in writing ESOL unit plans for their program’s curriculum
Description

This four-hour workshop on Backward Design focuses on designing instructional units for effective learning. The Backward Design approach, originated by Wiggins and McTighe [1], helps you connect the desired results of your teaching (i.e., learner outcomes) with how your learners will demonstrate their learning (i.e., assessments), and then plan the learning activities that will help your learners reach these outcomes. During the workshop, you will analyze a sample ESOL unit to uncover the essential elements of the Backward Design approach and then design a unit of your own. We ask that you bring sample units from your program’s ESOL Scope and Sequence to build on, refine, and share with colleagues.
