Overview

Many immigrant and migrant English language learners have experienced particular types of trauma. This three-hour interactive workshop will focus on these adult learners.

    Audience

This professional development activity/course is designed for:

  • ESOL educators who work with adult learners who have experienced trauma
Description

In this second session on trauma-informed instruction, you will make a deep dive into strategies for incorporating trauma-informed, resilience-oriented approaches into your teaching. The workshop will include case vignettes and background-knowledge assessment, and will foster collaborative learning by providing a supportive environment for small- and large-group discussion. You will be encouraged to contribute your own knowledge and expertise.

Professionals who work with trauma survivors may experience indirect trauma, so this workshop also will address strategies for taking care of yourself and how to model self-care for your students.

An understanding of the science of trauma and how it affects adult learning is essential for developing and applying these strategies, so attending the first part of this workshop is strongly recommended (see below).
