Overview

This series introduces the eight mathematical practices described in the CCR Standards for Mathematical Practice. Participants will consider ways to engage students in each of the mathematical practices. The challenge of working through problems in the assignments will encourage participants to consider the perspectives of both learner and teacher, forming the basis for rich group discussion of strategy and practices. Discussion will take place during the webinar meetings using the live chat box and polls. No prior knowledge of the practices and CCR Standards required.

Description

This series runs over several weeks and is composed of two internet-based assignments (to be completed independently in Weeks 1 & 3) and two live webinars. Participants must commit to all four parts. This series (independent work and webinars together) will take about 6-7 hours total to complete.

Course schedule:

Week 1: Dec. 28 to Jan. 6 - Independent study

Week 2: Live Webinar (Jan. 7, 3:00 - 4:30 pm)

Week 3: Jan. 14 to 20 - Independent study

Week 4: Live Webinar (Jan. 21, 3:00 - 4:30 pm)

    Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this professional development activity/course, you will be able to:

  • Explain what the CCR Standards for Mathematical Practices are
Provide examples of what each Mathematical Practice looks like in action in the classroom
Defend the practice of using challenging problems in the classroom
Offer examples of questions to engage students in each of the Mathematical Practices
