Overview

This workshop is one of six that have been developed to support ESOL teachers in gaining proficiency in and mastery of the MA Professional Standards for Teachers of Adult ESOL. Following the face-to-face session will be an on-line Community of Practice, designed to support teachers in their application of workshop objectives

Description

An effective ESOL curriculum for adult learners is based on their goals and interests and is relevant to their lives as family members, working people, and participants in their communities. In this workshop, we focus on using a learner-driven curriculum design process to review program goals, develop curriculum scope and sequence, and make connections to both the ESOL Curriculum Framework and the College and Career Readiness Standards for Adult Education. Activities include hands-on practice with developing contextualized thematic curriculum units that allow students to demonstrate learning and progress related to their personal, academic, and employment goals. Following the face-to-face session will be an on-line Community of Practice, designed to support teachers as they implement what they’ve learned in the workshop in their own practice.
