We are excited to start the new year with several blended professional development (PD) offerings! Some of them are completely online, so you won’t have to leave the warmth of the indoors and venture out into the wintery cold. Others combine face-to-face sessions with online components—giving you the best of both worlds. All of our offerings are presented and facilitated by knowledgeable and skilled ESOL professionals who will support you as you apply what you’re learning to your teaching practice.
. . . and we heard you! Check out these new resources in our library:

SABES reviews and identifies research for the adult education field in order to help Massachusetts adult education practitioners design high quality programs, provide rigorous instruction, and implement effective educational and advising practices. In addition to adult education studies that meet the “gold standard” for scientific research, SABES relies on the most rigorous and relevant research available, including evidence-based practice.
This video, developed by SABES, provides a quick overview of the ESOL standards and benchmarks for programs in Massachusetts.
The SABES PD Center for Distance Learning and Technology Support would like to share with you this two-page document Integrating Technology in WIOA that specifically names digital literacy among the list of programs, activities or services that comprise workplace preparation.
The Massachusetts Professional Standards for Teachers of Adult Speakers of Other Languages outline what teachers of adult English language learners need to know and be able to do. The standards were developed collaboratively over a two-year period with considerable input from Massachusetts adult ESOL practitioners, staff from SABES and the Department of ESE, and several TESOL experts and scholars. They were completed in the spring of 2014. The standards are informed by research into second language acquisition and applied linguistics as well as by other standards, including TESOL's.
