The Distance Learning (DL) Kick-off is for all Community Adult Learning Centers (CALCs) involved with the recruiting, screening, assessing and orientation of students learning at a distance. It is required for all new DL funded staff to attend. This year's kickoff is only for new DL funded programs and new staff.

This professional development activity/course is designed for:
In the Distance Learning (DL) Kick-off we will review the Massachusetts Distance Learning Model, provide you with information and share practices for recruitment, screening, and DL orientation. You will also have the opportunity to meet with the DL hub coordinators and discuss the DL processes they have developed and will share with you to use. Rather than developing your own processes, we ask that you use the processes developed by the DL hub coordinators, who have many years of experience to draw upon to give you their best practices for working with DL students. You can add to these processes as you have need.
This 5.5-hour kick-off is the first part of the hybrid online course Teaching Adult Basic Education Students Online. The 10-hour online portion of the course is required for all new DL staff. Taking this course will give you the opportunity to experience being a DL student. You will be asked to read about DL research back practices, contribute weekly to the discussion forums, and submit a distance learning plan as a final activity. More information for this online course will be shared at the DL Kick-off. Eunice Snay, DL coordinator, will be supporting you and facilitating this online course.
The total commitment for this course is 15.5 hours.
- Explain the role of CALCs and DL hubs in the Massachusetts DL Model to enhance student instructions and learning
- Describe two to three student supports to improve student learning provided by the DL coach at the CALC and the DL hub instructors
- Name three supplemental face-to-face activities and two "at a distance" activities that can be used to improve student persistence
- Explain the difference between directly enrolled and dual enrolled DL students
- Explain the three steps for DL SMARTT data entry
- Logon and be able to navigate the online course Teaching Adult Basic Education Students Online to communicate, participate, and perform activities
