An effective ESOL curriculum for adult learners is based on their goals and interests and is relevant to their lives as family members, working people, and participants in their communities. The lessons derived from a responsive and engaging ESOL curriculum provide opportunities for learners to practice and use new language in preparation for use outside the classroom. In this workshop, we focus on using a learner-driven curriculum design process to review program goals, develop curriculum scope and sequence, and make connections to both the ESOL Curriculum Framework and the College and Career Readiness Standards for Adult Education. Activities include hands-on practice with developing contextualized thematic curriculum units that allow students to demonstrate learning and progress related to their personal, academic, and employment goals. Instructional resources and materials are shared to minimize the need to “reinvent the wheel.”
