Overview

The Art of Advising introduces advisors to tools, strategies, and concepts that they can apply directly to the education and career planning process and helping students plan their next steps. It is geared towards new advisors, but it can serve experienced advisors seeking to refresh their knowledge and skills. 

Description

Participation in this 2-session training fulfills the requirement by The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (ESE) that all advising staff in in an ESE-funded ABE program complete the SABES Foundations for New Staff: Art of Advising within the first 12 months of employment.

To earn the Certificate of Completion, participants must attend both sessions and spend two hours in between each session on homework activities.

PART I: 3/9/16      10:00am - 3:00pm
PART II: 3/23/16   10:00pm - 3:00pm

NOTE: When registering for Part I (Mar 9) you will automatically be registered for Part II (Mar 23). To register use the " Register" tab at the top of the SABES Calendar.

Newly hired advisors do not need to take this course if they were previously employed at an ESE-funded ABE program and already possess a Certificate of Completion from the Foundation's course or from the New Staff Orientation.

The pre-requisite to this training for new staff is the online course "Foundations for New Staff: Overview of the ABE Field”. See below for more information about the prerequisite.

    Learning Objectives

    Upon completion of this professional development activity/course, you will be able to:

  • Discuss the role and responsibilities of the Education and Career Advisor, as outlined in the FY 13 Guidelines.
  • Describe the eight key components of Education and Career Planning .
  • Identify and select tools they can use in their own work to implement the components of Education and Career Planning.
  • Use the Indicators of Effective Advising to guide and assess their work.
  • Describe at least one career or adult development theory and the implications for their practice.
  • Describe legal obligations and procedures for reporting abuse and neglect.
  • Apply concepts of resiliency to advisor self-care and burnout prevention.

Prerequisites

In order to attend the Art of Advising course, you must successfully complete the 5-hour Overview of the ABE Field online course,  an online, asynchronous (self-paced) course, estimated to take five hours (but varies for each person). 

To register for Foundations for New Staff: Overview (online pre-requisite only) contact: Joanne Harrington, 508-8544527 or jharrington@qcc.mass.edu . It may take QCC up to 5 days to fulfill your registration request, so leave yourself time to complete the course.

New advisors should complete the online Foundations for New Staff: Overview of the ABE Field course before the first session of Art of Advising on March 9th. Please bring a copy of the email verifying completion of the online Overview of the ABE Field course with you to the Art of Advising (Part I).
