Scaffolding Writing through the Teaching and Learning Cycle

Cover page for the report

Scaffolding Writing Through the "Teaching and Learning Cycle" reports on learner outcomes from classes taught with WestEd's Leading with Learning approach, a comprehensive K-12 district improvement model designed to improve ELL student achievement and learning. Although the report reflects results of K-12 instruction, the content is extremely useful for adult ESOL instruction as well. The document promotes the scaffolded instruction of writing through the use of the Teaching and Learning Cycle (TLC), a pedagogical framework for scaffolding academic writing through deep and critical thinking tasks, academic discussions, interactive reading, and language development, and provides a clear description of how to build learner knowledge and writing skills through the use of many effective instructional strategies.
