Research has identified that four components—alphabetics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension—are essential in how reading develops, and essential in the reading process.
Use these freely available diagnostic assessments of reading to determine the reading strengths and areas of growth for your students. Then use the results to set instructional priorities.
Please note that it takes knowledge and skill to administer and interpret these tests effectively: get trained through STAR or through Evidence-Based Reading Instruction: Diagnostic Assessments of Reading. (This calendar post is for informational purposes; search the SABES PD Calendar for the next scheduled offering.)
Each of these assessments is available in MS Word and PDF formats (see below):
- The QARI: Quick Adult Reading Inventory (includes the student pages)
- Word Meaning Test (oral; there are no student pages)
- Fluency Response
