Welcome

Advising is essential to helping students stay motivated and persist in setting and achieving their education and career goals. Effective advising is more than establishing student education and career goals. Advising also involves assessing the supports and barriers students encounter on their pathway and connecting students to organizations that can help address them. It also entails collaborating with instructors to help students develop effective personal, college and career readiness, and workforce preparation skills.

The SABES Program Support Professional Development team offers workshops, resources, and guidance to support advisors in adult education programs on topics including an orientation for new advisors, advising program curricula, and trauma-informed advising.

Read below for a summary of our offerings, check out resources in the Resource Library, view all advising offerings in the Canvas catalog, and view the SABES calendar for upcoming professional development offerings.

Advisor Sharing Groups

The Advisor Sharing Group is a peer-facilitated opportunity for support staff to provide program updates, discuss and troubleshoot common challenges, and share resources, promising practices, and more. This group is open to all advisors working in adult education in Massachusetts.

To learn more about Advisor Sharing Groups, please visit the Canvas course catalog.

Advising Community of Practice

The SABES Program Support PD Team manages the Community of Practice (CoP) for Advisors. This online CoP is for advisors working in Massachusetts adult education programs to collaborate, network, share resources and materials, and solve tricky situations together.

To join the Advising Community of practice, click the Direct Enrollment (Join) Link and follow the directions. Please note that if you do not have a Canvas account, you will be asked to create one before you can select “enroll in course”.

Advising Courses

Courses and offerings support advisors in learning about the role, building their skills, developing an advising curriculum, providing trauma-informed advising, and developing career contextualized advising workshops and instruction.
