In this hands-on workshop we explore the relevance and applicability of the College and Career Readiness Standards in beginning ESOL classes. (This workshop was originally scheduled for April 1 in Devens, and has been moved to April 21 at World Education in Boston)
ESOL teachers are often vexed by the challenge to increase the rigor of their ESOL instruction for beginning level English language learners (ELLs). What is the value of teaching academic language to beginners and how do you do it? How do you stay focused on language skills development while also teaching content through complex texts? How do we build critical thinking skills as well as the language needed to engage in critical conversations? In this workshop, we explore these questions and identify answers that are relevant to our work with beginning level ELLs.
