One of the key instructional shifts of the College and Career Readiness Standards for Adult Education (CCRSAE) is building knowledge, and one way to build knowledge in the classroom is with text sets. We will explore examples of text sets, discuss the design of the coherently sequenced set of resources, and identify activities that will help students collect and articulate their learning. We will also see the impact on learner gains when students are accountable for the critical knowledge and skills acquired from what they read.
- Articulate the role that background knowledge and vocabulary have in reading comprehension
- Describe the difference between a text set and a collection of resources
- Identify text sets with sequenced resources and strong, authentic writing and speaking tasks
- Explore a variety of tasks that support intentional vocabulary and knowledge building within a text set
