Math Without Fear: Fostering Algebraic Thinking and Growth Mindset in the Adult Learner Classroom
In this 90-minute workshop, we will use real-world examples, algebraic tasks, and reflective dialogue to examine how to create inclusive learning environments that foster curiosity, confidence, and deep conceptual understanding. You will engage in hands-on activities and discussion protocols that model how to facilitate rich mathematical discourse and promote resilience and agency in learners at all levels. By the end of this session, you will be equipped with tools to shift mindsets, elevate student voice, and transform math from a subject of fear into a space of possibility.

Using the Math Proficiency Guide to Become a More Effective Math Teacher (Self-Paced Modules)
The Mathematics Proficiency Guide for Teachers of Adult Education is one of several companion pieces to the MA Professional Standards for Teachers of Adult Education. The Math Proficiency Guide is designed to inform the practice of new, developing, and advanced instructors who teach math to adult learners. This virtual course will provide participants with practical ways to learn from and implement the material in the Math Proficiency Guide to improve their own math instruction. The course is designed for both new and experienced adult education math instructors. The instructional strategies and ideas presented in this course are appropriate for all levels of math classes, whether your students are native English speakers or ESOL learners. This online course is designed help adult education instructors teach math to ELs more effectively and in a culturally respectful manner. The strategies and ideas presented in this course are also appropriate for adult ESOL instructors as well as ABE instructors who only have native English speakers in their classes.

Professional Standards in Action: Supporting Math Instruction through Classroom Visits (Self-Paced Modules)
Many adult education program directors do not have a background in teaching math or in math learning theory. Without this perspective, it is natural to have different or unclear expectations of what an effective math class looks like. This course will prepare directors to conduct math classroom observations by discussing the characteristics of effective math instruction and what it looks like in practice.

Learning What Students Know: Using Student Work for Formative Assessment
Formative assessment is the ongoing work of understanding how your students are understanding what you are teaching. While there are many ways to do formative assessment, one that is often readily accessible is looking at student work. There is a lot that can be learned by analyzing how students illustrate or describe their thinking—more than just a tally of what they got right or wrong. Formative assessment informs your instructional decisions so that your teaching can meet students where they are and help them move forward.
