Overview

In this participatory workshop, you will apply the backward design approach and use an ESOL lesson plan template to create ESOL lesson plans.

    Audience

This professional development activity/course is designed for:

  • All ESOL teachers and directors interested in taking a more systematic approach to lesson planning and in becoming more familiar with the ESOL lesson plan template designed by ACLS and SABES
Description

This four-hour workshop applies Wiggins and McTighe’s backward design approach to ESOL lesson planning. The process begins with the end in mind to help you connect the learning objectives of a lesson to a demonstration of learning. After you’ve established these two elements, you then plan the instruction and activities.

During this workshop, you will analyze a sample ESOL lesson to identify the essential elements of backward design and then use a lesson planning template to design a lesson of your own. We ask that you bring a unit plan from which to develop a lesson, or existing lessons to work on and refine.

    Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this professional development activity/course, you will be able to:

  • Identify the three stages of backward design
Analyze the key design elements in planning an ESOL lesson
Apply the three stages of backward design to design an ESOL lesson
