Overview

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) has been in effect for over 25 years, and many people are still confused about how the ADA defines disability and what is required of education providers under the law. In the first of this two-part webinar series you will learn about reasonable modifications, auxiliary aids and services, and resources available to help you ensure that students with disabilities can participate in the learning process.

    Audience

This professional development activity/course is designed for:

  • Designated ADA Coordinators
  • Advisors and instructors in the role of supporting students with disabilities
  • Program directors seeking information to guide program design and staffing that complies with ADA
Description

The ADA has been in effect for over 25 years, and many people are still confused about what the law requires and the ADA definition of disability. Can a monkey be a service animal? A miniature horse? What should you do if a student asks for the classroom to be scent-free? When students ask for reasonable modifications, who pays for it - the student or the organization?

The first webinar will address these topics:

  • Overview of the Americans with Disability Act
  • Snapshot of disability
  • Etiquette and terminology
  • Effective communication
  • Reasonable modifications of policies, practices and procedures
  • How to support learners with different disabilities
  • The resources and services provided by the New England ADA Center

Come with your questions!

The webinar series is presented by the New England ADA Center, an organization that provides outreach, training, information, guidance, and capacity building to help organizations meet the growing demands and complex challenges of providing core services in the 21st century.
