Overview

This engaging three-part workshop is designed to increase Adult Education teachers' understanding of the needs of English language learners (ELLs) in the classroom and to provide practical strategies and resources to better meet these needs.

    Audience

This professional development activity/course is designed for:

  • Teachers of adult education who would like to better address the needs of the English language learners in their classroom.
Description

English language learners new to ABE classrooms often find the transition challenging. In addition to strengthening their English language skills, they are also now learning academic content along with their native English speaking classmates. This engaging two-part workshop will increase Adult Education teachers' understanding of the needs of ELLs and provide practical strategies and resources to better meet these needs. The workshop will help bring teacher awareness to the particular language and cultural needs of ELLs, develop knowledge of key second language acquisition principles and teaching strategies, and guide teachers in applying these principles and strategies to more effectively support the ELLs in ABE classes. While this workshop will focus primarily on how to successfully engage and support non-native English speakers in the ABE classroom, the strategies are adaptable and provide support for the variety of students in your classroom.

Following the face-to-face sessions, participants will have time to apply strategies and techniques in their classes. The group will then reconvene for a webinar where they will have the opportunity to discuss their experiences and reflections with their colleagues.
