Overview

Three self-paced, 20-minute online modules give an overview of the new Massachusetts English Language Proficiency Standards for Adult Education, background on why and how they were developed and are organized, and guidance on how teachers can use them.

Description

The Massachusetts English Language Proficiency Standards for Adult Education (MA ELPS) are a revision of the Massachusetts ABE Curriculum Framework for ESOL. They integrate the College and Career Readiness Standards for Adult Education and the English Language Proficiency Standards into a single document. This overview covers how and why the MA ELPS were developed; the organization of the document; the strands, levels, standards, threads, and benchmarks within; the progression of the benchmarks through the levels; and how the MA ELPS can be used for rigorous English language instruction. You will need a headset or speakers to hear the audio.

    Learning Objectives

    Upon completion of this professional development activity/course, you will be able to:

  • Explain the rationale behind the development of the MA ELPS for AE
    Define the components that are included in the MA ELPS for AE
    Identify the focus of each of the standards
    Recognize the progression of the benchmarks through the levels
    Begin to use the MA ELP standards and benchmarks for ESOL instructional planning and delivery
