The SABES Mathematics and Adult Numeracy Curriculum & Instruction PD Center has created the Mathematics Proficiency Guide for Teachers of Adult Education as a companion document to the Massachusetts Professional Standards for Teachers of Adult Education. This proficiency guide provides concrete ideas on how to interpret and apply the MA Professional Standards for Teachers in the content areas of math. Together, the MA Professional Standards for Teachers and the Math Proficiency Guide provide a coherent picture of what effective teaching in an adult education classroom looks like.
This professional development activity/course is designed for:
- Program teams including math instructors and directors
This introduction to the Math Proficiency Guide is a face-to-face, 2.5-hour workshop for teachers and directors who want to be prepared to use the MA Professional Standards for Teachers and Math Proficiency Guide in conjunction with the Educator Growth and Evaluation (EGE) cycle for continuous improvement. Participants will learn about the structure and content of the Math Proficiency Guide and have a chance to start thinking about how to use it to inform the EGE cycle. Attendees, whether participating in the EGE or not, will have a chance to explore the Math Proficiency Guide and the accompanying self-assessment to understand how to use it to set and measure professional goals.
Coaches will be available post-workshop at 12:30 p.m. for those participants who are interested in discussing how to set their EGE goals.
Upon completion of this professional development activity/course, you will be able to:
- Understand the content and format of the Math Proficiency Guide
- Use the Math Proficiency Guide self-assessment based on the MA Professional Standards for Teachers as part of the EGE cycle
