The SABES English Language Arts Curriculum & Instruction PD Center has created an ELA Proficiency Guide as a companion document to the Massachusetts (MA) Professional Standards for Adult Education, providing concrete ideas on how to interpret and apply the Professional Standards in the content area of ELA. Together, the Professional Standards and the ELA Proficiency Guide provide a coherent picture of what effective teaching in an adult education ELA classroom looks like. Go to the ACLS Educator Effectiveness webpage for direct links to both documents.
This professional development activity/course is designed for:
- Program teams of ELA instructors and directors
This introduction to the ELA Proficiency Guide is a face-to-face, 2.5-hour workshop for teachers and directors who want to be prepared to use the MA Professional Standards for Teachers of Adult Education and the ELA Proficiency Guide in conjunction with the Educator Growth and Evaluation (EGE) cycle.
Learn about the structure and content of the ELA Proficiency Guide and have a chance to start thinking about how to use it to inform the EGE cycle. Whether or not you are participating in the EGE, you can explore the ELA Proficiency Guide's accompanying self-assessment to understand how to use it to set and measure professional goals.
Coaches will be available post-workshop at 12:30 p.m. for those participants who are interested in discussing how to set their EGE goals.
Upon completion of this professional development activity/course, you will be able to:
- Understand the content and format of the ELA Proficiency Guide
- Use the ELA Proficiency Guide self-assessment based on the MA Professional Standards for Teachers of Adult Education as part of the EGE cycle, and as a way of establishing professional learning goals for the year
