The SABES English Language Arts Curriculum & Instruction PD Center has created an ELA Proficiency Guide as a companion document to the Massachusetts (MA) Professional Standards for Teachers of Adult Education, providing concrete ideas on how to interpret and apply the Professional Standards in the content area of ELA. Together, the Professional Standards and the ELA Proficiency Guide provide a coherent picture of what effective teaching in an adult education ELA classroom looks like. Go to the ACLS Educator Effectiveness webpage for direct links to both documents.

This professional development activity/course is designed for:

This introduction to the ELA Proficiency Guide is a face-to-face, 3-hour workshop for teachers and directors who want to be prepared to use the ELA Proficiency Guide, the MA Professional Standards for Teachers of Adult Education, and the Educator Growth & Evaluation (EGE) Model. Learn how this guide connects to classroom practice, and why it is important for you to know.

Learning Objectives: 

Upon completion of this professional development activity/course, you will be able to:

  • Examine and describe the content and format of the ELA Proficiency Guide
  • Learn how the MA Professional Standard for Teachers of Adult Education, the ELA Proficiency Guide, and EGE Model all connect and support each other
  • Write a professional learning goal
