Description

This is the second in a series of three webinars presented by the Institute for Community Inclusion at UMass Boston on meeting the needs of students with disabilities in adult education.

What exactly do we mean by the term disability? And how do we ensure that students with disabilities are made to feel welcome in adult education? This webinar will take a close look at these issues and provide guidance on how to best serve students with disabilities. The presentation will begin with a discussion of defining the term disability: what types of conditions we are talking about and the impact on individual’s lives. We will then discuss the evolving views of disability over time to today where full inclusion of people with disabilities in all aspects of society is an expectation, and where disability is part of overall efforts of inclusiveness of diversity. We will then review some of the myths and facts regarding disability, and how to ensure that people with disabilities are treated in a respectful and welcoming manner. This will include a discussion of basic etiquette and use of language. At the end of this webinar, attendees will have a good understanding of disability issues, and how to ensure students with disabilities are made to feel fully welcome within adult education.

While we recommend that you participate in all three webinars to take advantage of this opportunity for deepening your learning,  participation in all three is not required.
