In this participatory workshop, you will develop instructional units using the Backward Design approach, which aligns desired learning outcomes, assessment, and activities.


This professional development activity/course is designed for:

  • ESOL teachers and directors involved in writing ESOL unit plans for their program’s curriculum

This 4-hour workshop on Backward Design focuses on designing instructional units for effective learning. The Backward Design approach, originated by Wiggins and McTeague, helps you connect the purpose and desired results of your teaching with how your learners will demonstrate their learning. During the workshop, you will analyze a sample ESOL unit to uncover the essential elements of the Backward Design approach and also design a unit of your own. We ask that you bring sample units from your program’s ESOL Scope and Sequence to work on and refine. 

Learning Objectives: 

Upon completion of this professional development activity/course, you will be able to:

  • Identify the three stages of backward design
  • Analyze the key design elements in planning a unit
  • Apply the three stages of Backward Design to design a thematic unit
