Overview

Have you been looking for high quality, conceptual math curriculum units that were designed with remote learners in mind? CUNY (The City University of New York) has developed remote learning packets for adult education students on different math topics.  This resource is freely available online at http://www.collectedny.org/indexftgmp/. This webinar will help you get started using these packets for remote teaching.

    Audience

This professional development activity/course is designed for:

  • ABE teachers and administrators at all levels of math ability and comfort
Description

In this webinar, we will discuss strategies for using these packets to structure remote math instruction, both for students with and without computer access. We will also dive more deeply into one of the packets, Tools of Algebra: Expressions, Equations, and Inequalities (Part 1), and look at specific activities and concepts that could be taught over video conferencing software to improve student learning.

The math content in Tools of Algebra: Expressions, Equations, and Inequalities (Part 1), CUNY Fast Track GRASP Math packet is appropriate for learners at the intermediate level, approximately GLE 5-9 (CCRASE Math level C and D). The materials are designed to give learners the opportunity to explore the math concepts involved and to apply them to real life situations (similar to the design of the CALM curriculum). Because they contain explanatory text, students should also have an intermediate to advanced level of reading.

Please note: Registrants will receive a separate email from Sherry Soares from the SABES Math team at TERC with instructions on how to access the Zoom session.

    Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this professional development activity/course, you will be able to:

  • Become familiar with the CUNY Fast Track GRASP Math Packets as a resource
  • Consider how to use these packets to structure remote math instruction
  • Consider activities and concepts that could be highlighted during online instruction (such as over video conferencing) while teaching the Tools of Algebra: Expressions, Equations, and Inequalities (Part 1) packet
