Overview

In this two-part workshop through Zoom, you will learn ways to adapt and transfer your best practices for teaching intermediate English learners to a remote learning context.

Shortly before the workshop begins, you will receive and email from Joanne Harrington at Quinsigamond Community College with the login information for Blackboard, where you will find the Zoom link. This course cannot be accessed through the SABES calendar.

    Audience

This professional development activity/course is designed for:

  • ESOL teachers of intermediate English learners
  • ESOL teachers with familiarity of basic Zoom features
Description

During two 90-minutes sessions hosted on Zoom, this workshop focuses on best practices for ESOL instruction (community building, learning routines, meaningful content and context, scaffolding, differentiation, formative and summative assessment, and release of responsibility) in teaching intermediate level English learners in remote contexts. We explore how we can bring those practices into both the synchronous and asynchronous remote instruction by using a variety of media and platforms (Zoom, WhatsApp, and the U.S. Postal Service). The workshop will address the challenges remote teaching presents to teachers of intermediate level ESOL students, while also highlighting some of its opportunities. This workshop suggests an open and curious "beginner's mindset" as we expand our teaching toolbox beyond the traditional classroom.

    Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this professional development activity/course, you will be able to:

  • Plan ways to adapt your best ESOL teaching practices to your remote teaching context
  • Identify some of the opportunities of remote teaching
  • Choose appropriate digital tools based on EL student accessibility and skill level
  • Draw on a network of like-practitioners for future support
