The TABE CLAS-E Writing Scoring two-part (seven hours total) online training is the second of three steps to becoming certified to score the TABE CLAS-E Expository Writing test. This is a training designed for new TABE CLAS-E Expository Writing test scorers.
Each participant must complete the following requirements in this order:
- Complete the seven-hour online training, each participant must complete the online, self-paced TABE CLAS-E Writing Administration training
- Complete the seven-hour online TABE CLAS-E Writing Scoring online training
- Successfully complete the assigned scoring activity within three weeks
When registering, participants must also provide a mailing address (home or workplace) where the Center for Educational Assessment at UMass can mail training materials prior to the training. If you register within seven days of the training, you will receive electronic copies of the materials via email and hard copies will be sent as well, but may arrive after the training.
Please note: Participants are asked to arrive 5 to 10 minutes early in case of technology issues, but at a minimum must arrive on time for both sessions and must attend both sessions in their entirety.

Training time will be spent learning about and using the CLAS-E Expository Writing Rubrics with the embedded Notes to the Scorer, the Supplementary Scoring Guide for the CLAS-E Expository Writing Assessment, and the TABE’s CLAS-E Writing Scoring Guide. Participants will also receive a brief overview of remote and physically distant in-person test administration procedures, and as well as information about additional resources on test administration under these conditions.
- Explain the TABE CLAS-E Writing Scoring Rubrics and scoring rationale
- Accurately score the students’ expository writing using the TABE CLAS-E Writing Rubrics and other scoring materials

Assessment Basics webinar: This webinar-based training takes 30 to 40 minutes and consists of two videos. The first video describes what assessment is, how assessment fits into curriculum and instruction, and how to interpret different types of test scores. The second video explains what assessments are required in Massachusetts for NRS reporting purposes and provides an overview of the ACLS assessment policies. If you have already completed the Assessment Basics webinar, you do not have to go through it again.
CLAS-E Writing Administration training: This online training developed by the Center for Educational Assessment at UMass Amherst is a self-paced learning experience designed to last approximately 90 minutes. The training consists of seven modules :

Module 3: Administering the Locator Interview and Locator Test for First-Time Test Takers
Module 4: Administering and Scoring the Multiple-Choice Portion of the CLAS-E Writing Test
Module 5: Administering the Expository Writing Portion of the CLAS-E Writing Test
Module 6: Remote Testing Guidance for the CLAS-E Writing Test
Module 7: Physically Distant In-person Testing Guidance for the CLAS-E Writing Test
UMass is also managing registration to ensure that as many programs as possible have access to this training. This training is capped at 20 participants, and only 2 people per program will be permitted in this training. If more than two participants from a single program sign up, the third participant (and any subsequent individual who signs up from that program) will be placed on a waitlist and contacted for interest and availability for a training at a later date.
