Overview

This intensely practical two-part professional development offering will guide you through choosing texts at the level of complexity that is most appropriate for your students, and strategies for helping students to tackle those appropriately complex texts.

    Audience

    This professional development activity/course is designed for:

  • Teachers and tutors who work directly with students as well as practitioners responsible for making text choices for your program's curriculum.

Description

Research has indicated that the ability to read complex text is an important predictor of college and career readiness, and helping learners master complex text is at the core of implementing the College and Career Readiness ELA Standards.

Part 1, face-to-face (6 hours) - Take part in hands-on activities to explore:

  • How to determine readability
  • How to use the CCR Standards rubrics to analyze the text complexity of informational and literacy texts
  • How to help students tackle text complexity at the word, sentence, paragraph, and whole text levels

Part 2, individual work (3 hours):

Complete approximately 3 hours of written homework activities to be submitted electronically one month after the workshop is held. Receive personal written feedback via e-mail from Dr. Strucker.


    Learning Objectives

    Upon completion of this professional development activity/course, you will be able to:

  • Define the terms readability and text complexity and explain how they are interrelated
  • Understand and discuss the Associated Quantitative Measure of Text Complexity Chart that is part of CCR Standards Reading Anchor 10
  • Use readability and text complexity to compare and select texts that are most appropriate to use with students
  • Dissect a complex text with your students, strengthening their ability to succeed in further learning opportunities in school, work, and life
