Overview

This session is the second tier of a one-day, three-tiered professional development opportunity designed to support teachers whose students are coming to virtual class on their smartphones.

Tier 2 is designed for those instructors who are proficient at accessing and using Zoom’s basic mobile features and want to expand their repertoire of engagement strategies and learning activities for learners on using smartphones.  

    Audience

    This professional development activity/course is designed for:

  • ESOL instructors teaching at any level. Participants will need both a smartphone and a laptop/desktop computer to participate in this session. All participants should be confident accessing basic Zoom tools on their smartphones or have completed the tier 1 session.
Description

In this hour-long, hands-on session, participants explore ways to transfer effective in-person instructional English language teaching practices to a virtual classroom where learners are participating on their smartphones. Participants will experience and work with pair and small group activities that integrate language skill development with key twenty-first century skills and consider how to increase learner engagement in remote instruction. Sample demonstrations and task work include: 

  • Think-Pair-Share
  • Visual thinking strategy questions 
  • Focused listening tasks
  • Team tasks with posters/presentations

you have used Zoom on a smartphone, your learners are using smartphones to attend class, and you want to increase your learners’ engagement in the virtual classroom.

    Learning Objectives

    Upon completion of this professional development activity/course, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a variety of community building, engagement, and formative assessment strategies using Zoom tools on a smartphone, such as:
    - gallery view, speaker view and spotlighting
    - polling and non-verbal responses
    - direct messaging
  • Conduct several learning activities with learners on smartphones including Think-Pair-Share, visual thinking strategy questions, focused listening tasks, and team discussions with a visual report
Prerequisites

Zoom app downloaded on a smartphone, completion of Tier 1, or familiarity with the Zoom features on smartphones.
