Overview

This session is the third tier of a one-day, three-tiered professional development opportunity designed to support teachers whose students are coming to virtual class on their smartphones.

Tier 3 is designed for those instructors who would like to collaborate with colleagues to develop mobile-friendly, differentiated learning tasks for their students using Zoom tools and high-leverage, rigorous practices (including academic language, scaffolding, cooperative learning, and critical thinking).

    Audience

    This professional development activity/course is designed for:

  • ESOL instructors teaching at any level. Participants will need both a smartphone and a laptop/desktop computer to participate in this session. In order to engage fully during this highly collaborative session, all participants must be able to demonstrate proficiency with Zoom tools on computers and smartphones.
Description

In this 90-minute virtual workshop, participants will collaborate to develop different types of differentiated learning tasks that develop language skills, build content knowledge and integrate twenty-first century skills and fostering learner voice and choice in the virtual classroom. Learning tasks include gathering, analyzing, and drawing conclusions from class data; creating a guest speaker project; and conducting, organizing, and presenting research around an essential question or line of inquiry.

You already know how learners experience Zoom on a smartphone, your learners are using smartphones to attend class, and you want to collaborate with colleagues to create curriculum.

    Learning Objectives

    Upon completion of this professional development activity/course, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate the integration of high-leverage, rigorous practices that maximize student engagement and learning in the virtual classroom
  • Use breakout rooms and Google Drive tools to differentiate instruction and foster learner agency
  • Differentiate learning tasks for learners using smartphones in the virtual classroom
Prerequisites

Zoom app downloaded on a smartphone and confidence conducting learner-centered ESOL lessons for learners on smartphones during Zoom virtual classes.
